There is
no one "correct" way to study. Students are individuals
and what works best for one person may be ineffective
for another. However, the following general tips may
prove useful.

Tips for Video/Telecourses:
|
 |
Watch all the programs and do all of the reading. Don't
substitute one for the other, i.e. don't skip a chapter
in the text because you saw the corresponding program
(or vise versa); the book and programs are complements,
not substitutes, and test questions will be taken from
both sources. Read the assignments before viewing the
lecture. |
 |
Do
your viewing in an environment as free from interruptions
as possible. Arrange for children's care, take the telephone
off the hook, get a snack before viewing, etc. Don't
get too comfortable - sit at a table. Set a routine
time for viewing and if you record the programs for
later use, view tapes in sequential order. Be sure to
take notes. |
 |
Set
up and stick to a study schedule. Without reminders
from other students and a classroom instructor, it is
easy to fall behind. Procrastination may put you too
far behind to successfully complete the course. |
 |
Contact
your facilitator to review any questions you might have.
You are encouraged to do this within ten working days
of the first broadcast and to continue communication
throughout the semester. |
 |
Make
use of your manual and study guide. These are designed
specifically for your telecourse and working the exercises
will help you measure your progress and identify concepts
which need more work. |
 |
Do the assignments on time! In particular, be sure to
meet the deadlines for mailing in the assignments and
take-home quizzes. This will help you avoid late penalties
that will lower your grade. It will also ensure that
your quiz results will be returned in time to help you
prepare for exams. |
 |
Review
the results of your take-home quizzes when the graded
answer forms are returned. Learn from your mistakes
- some of the questions on the midterm and final exams
may be taken from these quizzes. |

Tips for Teleweb and Online Courses: |
|
|
Purchase your textbooks and study guides. If you are
in a teleweb course, check out the videotapes from the
campus library where necessary and where available. |
 |
Create
your own learning space that is quiet and away from
distractions. |
 |
Set
up and stick to a study schedule. Without reminders
from other students and a classroom instructor, it is
easy to fall behind. Procrastination may put you too
far behind to successfully complete the course. |
 |
Check
your class website often for emails, discussion topics,
and instructors memos. |
 |
Read
your textbook and other assigned reading. Watch the
videotapes. Dont substitute one for the other
or assume class notes on the web are enough. Test questions
will be taken from all sources. |
 |
Actively access online resources. |
 |
Note
all due dates and do assignments on time. |
 |
Initiate
discussions. Learn and follow guidelines for email etiquette
(http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1855.txt) |
 |
Email
your instructor with any questions well in advance of
due dates. Remember your instructor may not respond
immediately. A reasonable time period to wait is 24-48
hours. |
 |
If
you still have questions, ask other students in the
class or consult the support web sites. |
 |
Type
all assignments on a word processor and import them
into WebCT/Blackboard or attach them to an email. |
 |
Submit
assignments at least 4-5 hours before they are due to
compensate for Internet processing time or down time. |
 |
Review
the results of quizzes. Learn from your mistakes. |
